Drug addiction can involve getting hooked emotionally and psychologically, as well as a physical dependence. However, if you’re addicted to either legal or illegal drugs, you will experience some sort of craving for it, making you want to use it again. Stopping the use of the drug may lead you to unpleasant physical reactions.

Drug addiction is a matter of seeking the use of a substance compulsively, no matter what the negative social, psychological or physical consequences. Some drugs - for example narcotics and cocaine - are more physically addicting than others. There is a staggeringly wide range of drugs to which you can become addicted.

To break a drug addiction will require the support of your family, friends, doctor, and frequently of others who have had an addiction in the past. Moreover inpatient and outpatient treatments may be required.

There are some basic, overall characteristics of drug addiction. These include:

  • The sensation of regularly needing the drug
  • Making sure that you keep a supply of the drug
  • Lack of success in trying to stop using the drug
  • Doing things to obtain the drug that you wouldn’t do for anything else (for example stealing)
  • Feeling that you can’t deal with your problems without the drug
  • Driving, or doing other activities that put you (and even other) in danger, while you’re under the influence of the drug.

Many other symptoms exist for drug abuse, that are specific to the type of drug that is causing the addiction. If you or someone you know is using an addictive drug, you should look into the possible addiction symptoms, to see whether or not they are at risk.

If you are afraid that your teenager may be addicted to drugs, have a look at these possible signs, and see if they apply:

Performance in school - showing a dislike for school and creating excuses to stay at home (you may wish to contact the school to see if your attendance records for the teen, and the schools records are matching). Watch for decreasing performance and possibly failing courses, or lowering grades.
Physical health - apathy and listlessness can be signs.
Appearance - how they look is very important to teens, so if there is a sudden disinterest in clothing, grooming or other appearance related issues, this could be a sign.
Personal behavior - teens do enjoy their privacy, however exaggerated attempts to stop you from entering their room, or knowing where they’re going, can be a sign.
Money - sudden requests for money that are not followed up by reasonable explanations can be a sign. You may also discover stolen money from areas that had previously been safe. Items in the house may also disappear, as they’re being sold to support a drug habit.

Drug addiction is a chronic, relapsing disorder. This means that if you suffer from drug addiction, if you are not careful, you could fall back into your old drug using behaviors, even after treatment. Therefore, the sooner you get help, the better your likelihood of establishing a long-term recovery.

If you feel reluctant to speak to your doctor, begin with places such as help lines or hot lines, where you can learn about treatment.
